Archaeological City Tour Arica

Visit Arica, discover the city’s archaeological richness and get to know the Chinchorro culture with the oldest mummies in the world.

You can explore this ancient culture on a visit to the Azapa Valley. The Archaelogical Museum of San Miguel de Azapa is home to Chinchorro mummies, which are over 10.000 years old. In the valley you can also spot numerous geoglyphs on the hills, like the stone images of “La Tropilla”.

  • Day 1 Archaeological City Tour Arica

    Departure from the hotel, we head to Azapa Valley, Cerro Sombrero and visit the geoglyphs of the troop which show natural forms (animals), humans and geometric figures. We stop at Las Lloysas,The Sacred Hill, The tumuli (burial sites) and the fort Pukara of San Lorenzo, ruins of a defensive fortress built with an artificial base that date from the twelfth century. It is a vestige of the Tiwanaku influence in the área. Furthermore we visit the archaeological Museum, San Miguel de Azapa which displays the world's oldest mummies belonging to the Chinchorro culture (5,000 BC) and pre-Incan relics dating back 10,000 years. Afterwards we will visit the cemetery, one of the oldest in the world.

    From San Miguel we continue through the "Devil Canyon“ and get to the village of Poconchile, famous for its church from the 15th century and the beautiful cemetery.. On the way back to Arica you can see rock art (petroglyphs) in Rosario and the geoglyphs „The Frog“, „The Eagle“ and „The Giant“ that date back to 1000 AD, in the formative period in the area.
